Introduce Mother-Tongue Days in Schools


For several reasons a pupil can wake up either happy or unwilling for school. Schooling can be boring to many when all days have the same activities. Little things however can make that girl or boy wake up feeling motivated, ready to enjoy the day. 

The little things can be a new (or a clean one) shirt, a new exercise book, a new deskmate, a sports day or activities that try to alter the monotonous way the school calendar can sometimes become. Introducing a Mother-Tongue day(s) at school will surely add to the fun of the day. 

Here a learner is envisioned waking up with a different mindset to speak a language different from the yesterday, to name and describe things differently, to listen to different voices from fellow learners and participate in the general aesthetics of this new world view. 

There can be rewards to such excellence. Exercises to showcase good Mother-Tongue grasp can be done on this day. A Mother-Tongue Disk as of old where other languages are discouraged can be reviewed in application so that it does not turn into a shaming exercise to those who cannot speak well but to identify the ones in difficulty for more attention. 

No need to belabour on why we need to deliberately have our indigenous languages known by young generation, the world at present keeps seeking for new knowledge. Language is an enormous store of wealth that if the efforts to share in, rediscover as well as cross-examining get more attention, more and more of talents and academic prowess will be fresh air to future generations. 

Monday for Mother-Tongue will for instance help the learner rejoin school after the weekend without feeling a drastic change of environment. Parents who are also worried about their children not knowing their home language can find this appropriate time to go through the process with them. And the directive to reintroduce Mother-Tongue to schools would have found a great support base to run smoothly. For if we have to save our languages, we have to have glove hands and work in glove.
